I listened to this audiobook read by Sedaris with his deadpan delivery, and alternated between squirming and hooting out loud. Each chapter is a separate essay about his life, mostly in France, but also on trips to the UNited States and Japan. The stories are loosely connected on the theme of smoking. Sedaris is from North Carolina originally, a state where smoking was akin to being patriotic, until anti-smoking sentiment swept the country in the 1990s. That, combined with his mother's death from lung cancer, persuaded the writer to quit. The process and results are all in the pages of When You are Engulfed in Flames. Hilarious, but not for those easily offended by language.
